Environmental car leasing
Environmental car leasing
2008 is the year in which it will become possible to save the planet whilst driving a top-end car. Honda’s FCX Clarity – the world’s first hydrogen fuel cell car – is to be rolled out in a bid to make motoring more environmentally friendly.
How does it work?
The FCX Clarity’s 171-litre tank feeds hydrogen into its fuel cell stack, where it combines with atmospheric oxygen to produce electricity. Of course, the by-product is water, so this car is as green as can be. Excess power is stored in a lithium ion battery.
Whilst the green-level of the car depends on the hydrogen source, Honda say that CO2 emissions from natural gas sources are less than half that of those kicked out by petrol or diesel vehicles.
Early estimates suggest that the FCX will be able to cover 270 miles from one tank – so the only challenge will be filling up with hydrogen. Honda is working with the big three major oil companies to minimise the difficulties of sourcing hydrogen, and they have also promised to produce a home energy centre. This will harness domestic natural gas to provide energy for the car and the home.
London already has one hydrogen fuel station, which Sir Richard Branson uses to fill up his Rolls-Royce. So, when Honda’s hydrogen car is launched in the UK, we are perfectly placed to make the most of it.
