Environmentally Friendly Cars
How environmentally friendly is your car?
Windsor Vehicle Leasing offers advice on minimizing your car’s carbon footprint:
Environmental issues, carbon footprints, sustainability, being green, the planet’s future – we are constantly being warned about the problems our planet faces as a result of our carelessness. You really want to do ‘your bit’ so you review the biggest polluter you own: your car. But is it even possible to drive a ‘green’ car?
The number of ethical options is increasing, starting with basics such as a smaller car or a fuel-efficient diesel engine.
However, the alternatives are more exciting and really shaking up the motor industry:
- You could convert your car to run on Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG), which is available at 1300 filling stations nationwide and, at around 35p a litre, means a substantial saving on petrol or diesel.
- What about an electric car? These are exempt from road tax and the recently increased London congestion charge. Honda and Toyota are leading the way here, having both developed ‘hybrid’ cars with duel fuel capability.
The Environmental Transport Association, in 2004, recommended the following ten cars:
- Honda Civic 1.3 IMA Executive
- Toyota Prius 1.5 T3
- Vauxhall Corsa 1.3 CDTI 16V Life
- Daihatsu YRV Premium
- Ford Focus CMax 1.6 TDCI LX
- Daihatsu Charade 1.0 EL
- Smart Pure Fortwo Coupe
- Volkswagen Touran 1.9 TDI S
- Peugeot 407 1.6 HDI S 110
- Honda Accord 2.2 I-CTDI Sport
There are tax benefits too if choosing a greener car as, since April 2002, company car tax has been based not on mileage but on your car’s carbon dioxide emissions. The higher the car’s emissions, the higher its tax liability (usually between 15% and 35%). This means that CO2 levels are one of the key reasons for choosing a company car now, not just its size and practicality.
